CONS
Our artist residency offers a unique, tranquil environment ideal for deep creative exploration. However, it might not be the right fit for everyone! Please consider the following before applying:
Quiet Rural Setting: If you are seeking vibrant nightlife or the bustling atmosphere of a metropolis, our residency may not meet your expectations.
Distance from Urban Amenities: Those who prefer having restaurants, cafes, and clubs within easy reach might find our remote location challenging, as these amenities are not just around the corner.
Lack of Coastal Scenery: If you are looking for a place by the seaside, our inland setting surrounded by forests and mountains does not provide beach access… 😉
Community Living: Our residency involves living closely with other artists for several months. If you are unsure about sharing living spaces with a few strangers, this might not be the best environment for you.
Financial Considerations: While we provide a monthly stipend of 750 EUR, this amount may not suffice for those accustomed to a higher cost of living or who have financial commitments that require a larger income.
Am I chained to this artist residency for the entire 90 days?
Well, not quite! While we won’t be monitoring your every move with a stopwatch like an overly strict boss, we do think it’s beneficial for you to be on the premises about 70% of the time. That’s about 63 days if you want to do the math! This is to ensure not only that you get your money’s worth (and ours), but also that you have enough time to immerse yourself in your artistic endeavors. Think of it as a creative-constructive freedom retreat, not a punishment!
Financial Support and Cost of Living
At our residency, we understand the importance of financial security in fostering artistic creativity. That’s why we offer a solid financial support package of 2250 EUR for the entire 90 days. To help you manage your expenses effectively, we pay this in monthly installments of 750 EUR in advance, giving you the freedom to plan comfortably.
As we are located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the average net salary is around 600 EUR, our stipend is quite generous. You will also find that the cost of living here is significantly lower compared to Western European countries. Everyday items such as food, transportation and leisure activities are more affordable, making your stay not only productive but also economically convenient.
Traveling to Mijakovići from Abroad: Comprehensive Travel Options
BY PLANE
The nearest major airport to Mijakovići is Sarajevo International Airport. It serves as a hub for international flights from various cities across Europe and connects indirectly with wider international locations. After landing in Sarajevo, you can take a taxi or a shuttle bus to get to the city center or directly to the bus terminal if you prefer to continue your journey immediately. Buses run frequently and offer a reliable and affordable means to travel. Once in Vareš, our residency program offers a pick-up service to Mijakovići, making the final leg of your journey seamless and stress-free.
Private Transfer from Sarajevo: for ultimate comfort, consider booking a private transfer. This can be arranged from Sarajevo directly to Mijakovići. Although more expensive, it offers direct door-to-door service and can be customized to your arrival time and specific needs.
BY TRAIN
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s train network isn’t as extensive. Keep in mind that trains might not be the most time-efficient option and do not go directly to Mijakovići.
TRAVELING TO MIJAKOVIĆI BY CAR OR BUS FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY
This variant offers flexibility and a personal touch to your trip. However, the feasibility of this option largely depends on your starting location and the distance you need to cover. Here’s what you need to know to plan effectively:
Traveling by Car
Route Planning: Before setting out, plan your route carefully. Tools like Google Maps or GPS devices are invaluable for finding the most efficient routes and for real-time traffic updates. Consider scenic routes if time allows, as Bosnia and Herzegovina offers beautiful landscapes that are worth exploring.
Border Crossings: If crossing international borders, ensure you have all the necessary documents, including passports, car registration, and insurance papers. Some borders may also require you to purchase a vignette or pay tolls.
Legal Requirements: Familiarize yourself with the driving laws and regulations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and any other countries you’ll pass through. This includes speed limits, rules about alcohol consumption, and any specific requirements like the mandatory use of headlights during the day.
Safety and Preparedness: Long drives require preparation. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition, and consider joining a roadside assistance program. Pack emergency supplies such as a first aid kit, water, snacks, and a blanket.
Traveling by Bus
Taking a bus from another country to Bosnia and Herzegovina is a viable alternative if you are coming from parts of Europe that are well-connected by international bus services. Here’s what to consider:
Bus Routes: Research bus routes from your country to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Major cities often have direct bus connections to Sarajevo, and from there, you can catch a local bus to Vareš and utilize our pick-up service to Mijakovići.
Tickets and Schedules: Check for ticket availability and schedules well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. Booking tickets online can often save time and money.
Comfort and Convenience: Although buses can be more economical, consider the length of the journey and the amenities offered on long-distance buses. Look for services that offer comfortable seating, air conditioning, and even Wi-Fi.
Local Tips for Travelers
LANGUAGE
While Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian [BHS] is the primary language spoken, many people, especially younger individuals and those in the tourism sector, speak English. Learning a few basic phrases in BHS can help in navigating rural areas.
CURRENCY
Bosnia and Herzegovina uses the Convertible Mark (BAM). It’s advisable to have some local currency for areas that may not accept credit cards, especially in rural regions like Mijakovići.
CONECTIVITY
Consider purchasing a local SIM card if your stay is extended, as it will help with navigation and local communication.
